not even a jk at all

in other wordz...

i guess this all makes me think about what i think about all the time, which is way simple consciousness that these "equality" fights are not going to change our lives AT ALL. especially for like almost ALL OF US. legal rights for marriage and gay sex is really a fight for private property and privacy. job discrimination legislation HUH IMAGINES that it would fix the extreme economic disadvantages plaguing most of us- like the economy is otherwise ok without discrimination, um no we know better. and actually most of the violence we suffer is not at the hands of pathological haters, but at the hands of cops, prison guards, administrative bureaucrats etc

or really just INDULGE YEHSELF in Dean Spade's ideas. it's really fun and easy go for it.

  1. yes, i saw that on facebook. i think it speaks to the failure of the gay marriage proponents to make their case. it also seems like someone who is young and single and lives their life in a night club can easily speak of their own radicality while working folks who are not hip or young, whose lives are affected by laws and hospitals and even property, could have a different point of view about their equality under the law which is equally valid, if not more grounded in the admittedly unexciting world of daytime. the fact that the gay marriage activists have not made a case outside of their white bubble is shameful. but i am a poor of color homo who is educated but not particularly upwardly mobile, and i'm married because i did not want to be barred from seeing my partner in the hospital when it goes that way, and that is the way it goes, at some point, if you stay together long enough. but yeah, it's not cool to get married. i hate it when straight people do it, and most of the gays i know who have were pretty embarassed. but if you really want to know how the world works: gay marriage is the destruction of all marriage. that is what the right wing says and they are right about that: it is the plan.

  2. hi alex thanks for raising this side of the debate. hospital visitation rights are very important and tie into other areas where legitimate family structures are necessary for survival in our society. i think the question for me lies in the distribution of resources (legal, activist etc) in disproportion to the distribution of life chances for low income trans people of color - for whom there are more urgent survival issues than marriage. i totally agree that the nightclub is conventionally not radical, and does purport an illusion of radicalness. but i'm interested in ways that it could be radical, which have nothing to do with the style and look of anarchy (boring!) yes! totally there needs to be a marriage here of coolness. because i don't think you can necessarily say that the night and day are.. well like night and day. because i would argue that it's probably equally uncool to be young and hip or to be married and gay. but yea i'm really excited to think and write about that more thanks!
